The local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7665 is still struggling, but is in better financial shape since an emergency meeting was held recently, said Charlie Lehmann, senior vice commander of the post. Each VFW member was called, and 33 members showed up, a good turnout. Several members contributed large amounts of money to bring the post out of debt, said Lehmann, but more is needed. “Nobody wanted to see the post closed,” he said, which is why the membership is now making a major move with fundraising efforts. One is having meals that are open to the public. The post is offering a taco and burrito night on Thursdays from 5 to 7 p.m., a special Friday night dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. and a breakfast onSundays from 9 to noon. You get great food, and a lot of it,” Lehmann said. The post is also planning buffets on Christmas Eve Day and on Christmas Day. Those will also be open to the public, as an effort to raise funds for the lodge. The buffets, which will be held from noon to 3 p.m., will be available for a $6 donation per person. And on Saturday, Dec. 22, the Ladies Auxiliary will be holding a craft fair, bake sale and rummage sale at the post from 10 a.m. “to whatever,” Lehmann said. The hall at the VFW Post at 2811 Nugget Ave. (behind the McDonald’s) in Lake Isabella is also for rent for parties, concerts and special occasions. So is the kitchen. They also do catering. Call 379-3877 for prices and more information. Their dining room can seat 58. There is a dance area as well, and the full service bar is open to the public if arrangements are made with a member. Ask the post for details. “We need donations as well,” said Lehmann. The post does community service, such as the recent Christmas party they held for children, during which they (and Santa Claus) hosted almost 100 kids. Free hot dogs, cookies, apples and oranges were provided.
